Morning drumming becoming heartbeat of SD57

PRINCE GEORGE – Once upon a time drumming and singing Indigenous songs in schools was something foreign and abnormal, but lately, that has changed.

The Indigenous Education Department of School District 57 has taken on the challenge of making drumming and singing Indigenous songs a normal regular occurrence in schools.

“We really want to spend time making sure kids feel welcome, feeling like they belong in school,” said Katie Marren, Vice-Principal of SD57 Indigenous Education Department. “We are focusing on bringing language and culture into all our schools, and it’s just a beautiful way to start the day.”

College Heights Secondary School was the site of drumming on Wednesday, just one of many buildings in SD57 that have been part of the drumming celebrations over the past month.

The songs sung by students and educators were all gifted to the district from Francois and Ruby Prince part of the Nak’azdli First Nation.

The hope is that the drumming will continue into 2022, and by June schools will be able to sing the songs and play the drums without any help from the Indigenous Education Department of SD57.
