Local post secondary students recognized for studies in forestry
NORTHERN BC- A group of post secondary students from across the province are being recognized by the BC Council of Forest Industries. Prince George residents, Tyler Emberley and Dorothy Stewart are two of the 13 recipients of the $2,000 COFI 2021 Forestry Scholarship.
Emberley is studying to become a mechanical engineer at UBC, while Stewart is studying human resources at Native Education Training College. Another pair of recipients hail from Northern BC, Daniel Lecourt from Smithers is studying commerce at the University of Victoria. Additionally, Ashley Philip of Burns Lake, who is studying to become an engineer at the University of Victoria. One of the recipients is from the Cariboo, Tyler Fenton from Quesnel, who is studying to become a forest technician at CNC.
According to Susan Yurkovich, President & CEO of COFI, the scholarship was established with the goal of encouraging young people to choose a professional, technical or trades career in forestry. She notes that the forest industry has been a cornerstone of the province’s economy for more than a century and supports 100,000 good jobs for BC residents.
“These students will have the opportunity to play an integral role in moving the industry forward.” said Yurkovich. “From forest technicians to data analysts, and everything in between, these students will bring creative and innovative ideas and solutions to BC’s forest sector.”
