Cougars comeback but fall to Blazers in a shootout
PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Cougars came close to sending 2021 off with some fireworks but ultimately lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Kamloops Blazers at the CN Centre Friday night.
The Cougars battled back from 2-0 in the first period to secure a single point against the top team in the BC Division as the Cougars’ record now sits at 13-16-1-1 while the Blazers improve to 20-9-1-0.
4:12 into the game, the Blazers were on the powerplay and became the first to let off fireworks as Quinn Schmiemann scored the opening goal. The tally marked his 10th goal of the season as Kamloops stepped ahead with an early 1-0 lead.
Just ahead of the midway mark of the period, Jonny Hooker was victim to a high hit behind the Kamloops net which drew a crowd. From that, Blake Eastman and Schmiemann dropped the gloves. Eastman was handed an unsportsmanlike penalty, as well as five minutes for fighting.
