PRINCE GEORGE- An anonymous Prince George resident who goes by the nickname, “Mad Hatter”, has been decorating the statue on the corner of Victoria Street and 20th ave for the past 8 winter seasons. They adorn the silhouetted statue with gloves and toques that they knit throughout the year. However, their work is so much more than just a fun project, as the winter gear is often used by the most vulnerable Prince George residents to keep them warm during harsh northern winters.

“Many people drive by that statue many times a year and I just thought it needed some colour and at the same time, could give something to people that needed it,” the Hatter explained.

Part of the Mad Hatter’s inspiration comes from the Yarn Bombing event in 2015. Before starting the project, they got permission from the creator of the statue, Roman Muntener. As of today (Wednesday), only a few of the toques remain on the statue.

All throughout the year, the Mad Hatter works to create enough winter gear so they’re prepared to decorate the statue each December. They are already working on their supply for next winter. The Mad Hatter says they’re always delighted to see their products out in the community.
