PRINCE GEORGE– Every city has homeless people, however not every city throws -40 weather at them come wintertime.

Cold weather can hurt your body in negative ways even when you are wearing proper winter clothing. However, when you are living on the street and don’t have the resources it can detrimental to your health. The Sk’ai Zeh Yah Youth Center helps out homeless youth between the ages of 15-29 and usually see about 40 people a day coming in to just try and survive.

Although they receive some services like hot chocolate, heating spaces, and getting their clothes dried it still worries some when heading back out into the cold after service closes to not only survive the cold but also the pandemic. Amy Merritt believes they are overwhelmed. It doesn’t help that the pandemic has created a shortage of resources which Merritt says is a big factor.

Daniel Roy was one of those people as he was homeless in Prince George for close to 15 years and he knows first hand that what the homeless population is experiencing right now is no joke. He says dealing with the cold, finding shelter and the stigma people assume of being homeless makes it tough on a person. All while dealing with temperatures that reach close to -40

However, there are ways to help out. one way is stopping by the Youth center on 2nd avenue and donating warm winter clothing and other items like gift cards or giving them a call at 250 564 5643 and setting up an appointment for a drop-off.
