PRINCE GEORGE – While everything else is cold around Prince George, the stick of Koehn Ziemmer has been hot this month as he extended his point-streak to three games. All while the Prince George Cougars extended their winning streak to three games in a 5-3 final over the visiting Victoria Royals Tuesday night inside the CN Centre.

Tyler Brennan made his sixth straight start between the pipes for the Cougars on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Tyler Palmer got the night off as Victoria’s Head Coach Dan Price opted to put Campbell Arnold in the crease against the Cats.

Through five meetings between Prince George and Victoria, the Cougars held a perfect 5-0 record against the Royals. The two clubs had not met since Oct. 27, but since then the Royals have appeared to be a completely re-energized team going 11-7-4.

However, since the turn of the New Year, the Royals entered the CN Centre looking for their first win of the year while the Cougars were coming off of back-to-back wins against the Vancouver Giants in Langley.

In the opening period, the Cougars were quick out of the gates and to pick up the series that has been stagnant for the past few months. On the powerplay, over two minutes into the period, Keaton Dowhaniuk winded up for a shot from the point and Jonny Hooker got enough of his stick on the shot to get the puck in past Campbell Arnold.

The goal marked Hooker’s 10th of the season, his fifth on the powerplay.

Just a minute and a half later, Koehn Ziemmer continued to bolster his stats this month as he extended his point streak to three games with his 14th goal of the season.

Throughout the first 20 minutes, the Cougars were active in the defensive zone with sticks filling the Royals’ passing lanes and the majority of the shots on Tyler Brennan coming rushed in transition. The Cougars doubled up on the Royals in shots, 14-7.

The Cougars piled it on in the 2nd period, getting three goals in a span of three minutes to push their lead to 5-0.

Koehn Ziemmer got it started in the middle frame just over four minutes into the period. Riley Heidt fed the Cougars’ winger in close on the Royals net. Number 13 tucked the puck in past Arnold.

Just over a minute later, on the powerplay, Jonny Hooker stepped up and pounced on a loose puck within the blue paint. And then Hudson Thornton topped it off with a shot from close to the boards along the left wing to make it a 5-0 game. IT was the Cougars’ third powerplay goal of the game.

Victoria was able to finally catch a break after a hooking penalty to Carlin Dezainde. Gannon Laroque scored his fifth of the season and got the Royals up onto the board 13:37 of the period.

With just over two minutes to play in the period, Anthony Wilson trailed into the zone in transition and wristed a shot past Brennan. The tally marked his third of the season.

After 40 minutes, the Cougars held the lead both on the scoreboard and in the shots department 26-19 following a period the two teams matched each other with shots on net.

The Royals added a third to their point total late in the third period, but it was the Cougars coming away with a 5-3 victory in the end in the first of doubleheader against the Royals.

Brennan stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced from the Royals while Arnold allowed five goals on 34 shots.

The two teams will be back on the ice Wednesday night at the CN Centre. The game is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m.
