Spruce Kings win fourth straight against Penticton

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Spruce Kings have been wanting consistency and they have found the recipe for it lately, pushing their winning streak to four games following a dominant 6-2 win over the Penticton Vees Wednesday night inside the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

The red light didn’t get tested until the second period and when it did it was in favour of the Spruce Kings. Simon Labelle broke the silence inside the RMCA Wednesday night, putting the Kings ahead 1-0. It marked the Ottawa, Ont. native’s eighth of the season.

Nearly four minutes later, Labelle was back inside the offensive zone causing problems for Penticton after picking the pocket of a Vees player. He put a shot on net which ended up getting tipped by Nick Rheaume in front of the net. The goal made it 15 on the season for Rheaume.

Just 18 seconds later, a miscue by Vees’ goalie Colin Purcell behind the net saw the puck end up on the stick of Nathan Fox to the left of the net, before firing the puck tight to the post and in for the unassisted goal. It was Fox’s second of the season as he push the lead to 3-0.

After a pair of blocked shots inside the final minute of the period, the Vees finally were able to get the Spruce Kings lost enough in the defensive zone to get a puck to go in past Aaron Trotter. Josh Niedermayer put the puck blocker side on Trotter to narrow the Prince George lead to 3-1.

In the 3rd period, Penticton got to within one in the early goings of the period. Josh Nadeau scored his 22nd of the season 3:27 into the period.

Ahead of the midway mark of the period, Nick Rheaume reclaimed a two-goal lead for Prince George. Josh Wright with a strong effort to get the puck in front of the net, where Rheaume potted the marker.

At the 13:58 mark of the period, the Spruce Kings’ captain Kolton Cousins came up with his 12th goal of the season to push Prince George to a 5-2 lead.

Following a roughing penalty to PG’s John Herrington, the Spruce Kings found themselves shorthanded, but that certainly didn’t phase the group as Nick Rheaume put the french braid on Braden Doyle of the Vees before setting Rowan Miller in front of the net to make it 6-2, which would go on to stand as the final Wednesday night.

With the win, Prince George improves their record to 18-9-2-1, gaining some ground on the second-ranked Vees in the Interior Division.

The Spruce Kings will now get set for a pair of games on the road down in Trail against the Smoke Eaters Friday and Saturday night.
