PRINCE GEORGE – The Simon Fraser Bridge travel will be down to two lanes for several months. Traffic is rerouted to the northbound side while the work is being done. The $20.5 million upgrades are earmarked for the southbound side of the bridge.

Also, as part of the modernization, the railing will be replaced on the over 380-metre bridge. Crews will lift the north approach of the bridge to increase the underpass height to the same height as the northbound bridge.

The height restriction under the southbound bridge is limited to just under five metres. The surface of the old bridge deck will be removed and replaced with wider concrete sections.

The southbound bridge built-in 1963 was twinned in 2009 with another two-lane bridge bringing four-lane capacity to the crossing.

According to the province, the Simon Fraser Bridge is the busiest in Northern BC, with nearly 18,000 vehicles daily.

The Simon Fraser Bridge is a crucial link for the northern supply chain. The bridge modification began a few weeks ago and is scheduled to be completed fall of this year.

The province awarded the contract to Prince George-based Ruskin Construction.
