The City of PG breaks the ice

PRINCE GEORGE – The city has implemented a new tool to fight ice buildup on walkways this winter. City crews aim this new tool to help ease things annoyed with those fed up with slippery sidewalks.

As the snow and ice began to form on sidewalks this winter, crews brought out its walkway ice breaker.

The new piece of equipment resembles a small steel drum with spike studs. The icebreaker attaches to the front of a tractor, perforating the ice as it rolls along.

With the perforation, the ice-breaking drum also provides some traction.

The roughly 2000 pound spiked drum was put into operation this winter and has made a difference in removing ice buildup.

The city purchased the rolling ice breaker at around $18 000 dollars.
