New destination park coming?

PRINCE GEORGE – The rotary clubs in Prince George have a reputation for building parks and they’re at it again. This time, they have set their sights on a new destination park. Early designs have a splash park like that in Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, an adventure park similar to that at Duchess Park. But one thing the city lacks and this park will include a Red Bull certified pump track.

“The nearest pump track to here is Chilliwack,” says Rod Holmes with Downtown Rotary. “It’s different from the bike riding that you do in town, different from the ones down at Carrier Jane Gray Park. It’s high energy, high excitement. Anybody can do it. It’s just incredible. It’s a great addition.”

And while today’s event was to raise awareness about the plans for a new destination park, February 26th will be about raising funds. That’s when the Prince George Cougars will be holding the second Mega 50-50 draw of the season.

“Our last Mega 50-50, in the fall, was well over $80,000. In fact, the winner took home just over $40,000 that night,” says Fraser Rodgers with the Prince George Cougars. “We hope to make that even bigger.”

But the Cougars aren’t the only organizations planning to pitch in.

“The Rotary Clubs in town are looking to put some money into it, the Community Foundation is looking to put some money in. And there’s other groups. It’s amazing. Without having any hard and fast plans, the community is coming together incredibly. This is a million to million and half project. Something like that.”

The idea of a destination park has been brewing for some time and the Community Foundation explains how it got involved. “As we just celebrated our 25th anniverary, it’s been in the back of our mind how we could have a lasting legacy for the community,” says Mindy Stroet, the Director of Development for the Community Foundation.

The renderings shown at this event are just that, renderings. They were drawn up after conducting a straw poll of the community’s wishes. The plan is to hold more formal public consultation before final plans are pulled together.
