More pains to come at the pumps as gas prices are expected to rise

PRINCE GEORGE – If you are a driver then you know the pain when it comes to filling up your vehicle at the pumps. Fuel prices are at an all-time high across the province.

In the Lower Mainland gas is sitting around $173.9, over on the island fuel sits at $165.1, and back here in Prince George, our fuel costs us $154.9 per liter. However, there is one town in B.C. that currently has the cheapest gas and that’s located in Dawson Creek which is sitting at $139.9.

Patrick Da Haan who is head of Petroleum Analysis for GasBuddy, says we likely won’t see a break in price for a while.

“There is a concern and a threat that, there could be a Russian incursion into Ukraine. Obviously, oil hates turmoil, there is an increased risk if Russia does make a move, that somehow oil production could be affected,” explains Patrick Da Haan “Russia is the second-largest oil producer globally. So there is a lot at stake here, at a time oil consumption is going up globally as the pandemic eases.”

Not only will this geopolitical situation drive up prices but so will the seasonal change.

“On average gas prices in Canada increase anywhere from 0.15 to 0.35 cents a liter between late winter and the start of the summer driving season. Essentially because demand for gasoline will start going up, we switch back to more expensive blends of gasoline in the summer months, and refineries are also going to carry out seasonal maintenance, which limits their ability to produce as much gasoline as that transition happens.”

So for now, our wallets will feel the burn as prices continue to rise and fluctuate. Da Hanna suggests shopping around for the best prices before filling up. Not much of a choice here unless you have a Costco card, however the Super Save on Victoria is sitting at $153.3 which can save you about 1.6 cents per liter.
