PRINCE GEORGE – The record stood for 15 years.

But on Saturday (Feb. 28), playing in front of his hometown fans, Tyrell Laing pushed his name to the top of the UNBC All-Time Scoring list, surpassing Jay Gladish, with his 1,179th career point.

Gladish sent Laing a video message following the accomplishment.

“It’s a huge accomplishment and it shows the dedication you’ve had to the school, and you’ve been fully committed as an athlete and as a student,” he said. “I think it’s very cool that a homegrown Prince George product now holds this record.”

Earlier this season, Laing became the school’s U Sport leading scorer when he passed Rhys Elliott for most in UNBC’s Canada West history. The Australian-born guard scored 934 in his time with the Timberwolves from 2014 to 2017.

The school’s all-time record combined its athletic history from its years as a member of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association and U Sport (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport)

Back in 2016, Tyrell Laing kept his basketball talents in Prince George.

After graduating from Prince George Secondary School, the local baller ventured up University Hill where he would spend the next six years at the University of Northern British Columbia as a member of the Timberwolves men’s basketball team.

Since then he has earned a number of accomplishments while wearing the Green and Gold. In 2018, he was named UNBC Male Rookie of the Year. He then followed that up with being named UNBC’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2020. That same year, he was the Canada West Scoring Champion. He scored 437 points that season, beating out Calgary’s Brett Layton by three points.

At the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, Laing finished as Canada West’s second-highest scorer with 341 points. Trinity Western’s Ja’Qualyn Gilbreath finished as the league’s top scorer with 499 points.
