PRINCE GEORGE– With the weather slowly warming up it’s the time of year when Bears start to come out of hibernation.

And like most people who wake up from a deep slumber, the first thought that crosses that bears mind is time to get some food whether that is in the wild or the community.

The City of Prince George has sent out their yearly reminder for residents to be “Bear Aware” and help residents learn that it’s important for both humans and bears too.

What’s that phrase mean though? Nicole Botten from the Northern Bear Awareness Society says it means avoiding smelly garbage, putting the can out on the curb on the morning of garbage day, and of course keeping it tight and secure. Another thing bears might look for as a food source is Bird Seed so it’s always a good thing to bring your bird feeder in as well.

Fines can get up to $100 if a bylaw officer finds out you’re not doing your part in helping keep both the community and wildlife safe. So make sure you avoid paying a pretty penny and keep our furry friends safe
