PRINCE GEORGE – Several days into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many people are trying to help out the best way they can.

Here in Prince George, the Ukrainian St. George’s Catholic Church has received an overwhelming amount of support. Pastor Andrii Chornenkyi says the support from the community is “tremendous” and says he feels the whole world standing behind Ukrainians.

“Whenever[sic] I turn, people, are cheering and supporting us. Showing their compassion.”

However, Chornenkyi says he hasn’t been able to keep up with the messages and phone calls. It’s been overwhelming and he is trying to get back to as many people as he can.

One saving grace at this time is a group called “Prince George For Ukraine” they are in the infancy stage but, the group was created to help support the church as well as Chornenkyi.

” PG for Ukraine is a group of people who formed because there were a lot of questions about how can we help? and there wasn’t a place where people could go to quickly find out answers” explains Charles Scott, one of the founders of Prince George for Ukraine “So we decided, having a place where people could go to quickly find out answers was particularly helpful.”

This group was created to prepare for donations, financial support, and discussion on visa and immigration requirements for entering Canada. It also discusses sponsorship to Canada. There are also links to counsellor lead support groups to help process emotions around the current events taking place.

” You get a sense of how important and significant it is, as you are walking with somebody, who had to flee the land they were born in and are looking to start a new life,” said Charles Scott ” That’s a lot better than spending this weekend checking out the latest streaming series on Netflix. There are ways that you can spend your time, that matter.”

If you are interested in learning more or want to help, you can email pg4ukraine@gmail.com. You can also add yourself to the group “Prince George for Ukraine”. There is an open house planned for the coming days which will be held at Ukrainian St. George’s Catholic Church.
