Fundraising for family caught in house fire continues tonight

PRINCE GEORGE – A family struck with an unimaginable tragedy is getting a helping hand from the community. On February 28, a fire broke out at the home of Brett Martin, Elicia Mckinney and their four children. While everyone made it out of the home Mckinney and two of her children suffered serious injuries.

Mckinney was treated locally but her two children were transferred to Vancouver Children’s Hospital with Martin traveling to be with them.

Their youngest, Araya-Vada succumbed to her injuries.

Mckinney’s daughter Destiny started a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of hotels, food, transport and other bills.

The community came together and have raised over $55,000 at the time of writing for the family, including a $12,000 donation from Avenue Living and Mini Mall Storage staff.

Other charity events have been set up for the family including a stand up comedy show tonight at the Firm Lounge and Grill. The show will also feature a silent auction with 100 per cent of the night’s proceeds going to the family.

A donation drive has also been scheduled for Saturday March 12, at the CN Center Parking lot from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone looking to donate should come at the designated time and find the large black trailer.

Mckinney recently was released from hospital and the family is now just waiting for four- year-old Darion and father Brett to return home from Vancouver Children’s hospital.
