Prince George ready to welcome Ukrainian refugees
PRINCE GEORGE – It didn’t take long into an event in support of Ukraine before that conflict came uncomfortably close to home.
“Well half my family today had to flee to Poland,” explains Father Andrii Chornenkyi, head of St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. “Because today there was a bombshell in our city. At this point, it’s only infrastructure for structural things. But you never know.”
Since Russia invaded in late February, Prince George has hosted events to show support for Ukraine in various different forms and its leadership stepped up today by signing a letter addressed to both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier John Horgan, indicating this community’s readiness to provide a safe haven for those Ukrainians displaced by the conflict. For Father Andrii Chornenkyi, it’s putting words into action.
