The United Nations estimates as many as three million people have fled Ukraine.

“You feel helpless because it’s not as easy as pressing a button or picking up a phone and being able to open up those corridors,” explains MP Todd Doherty. Prince George is no stranger to this kind of endeavour. In 2016, Prince George opened its arms to refugees displaced by the Syria conflict and it’s time to ready this community again.

“What do we do to prepare as a community, as a region, as a province and as a nation so that when they do arrive here, we’re ready?” says Doherty.

A website called Prince George For Ukraine is a central hub of information on the various different ways people can help.

Father Chornenkyi says he can’t believe the level of support this region has extended. “People are calling me personally from different places. Dawson Creek, Burns Lake, locally, offering their help with housing or financially or clothing. Different kinds of help. And I am really touched and surprised to see such overwhelming support from different communities.”
