Tax break

Mackenzie wants a better tax break

Mackenzie – The community of Mackenzie continues to experience loss of jobs and services. To help out during their time of need, some residents would like the federal government to assist them with better tax breaks.

Mackenzie is a small remote community. Over the years, the district has experienced losses in vital services. It has forced some residents to travel long distances for health care and professional services. Permanent residents only receive half of the northern tax deduction, totalling thousands of dollars each year.

Mayor Joan Atkinson says things have changed a lot. For instance, 25 years ago, there was a dental clinic, and an optometrist in town, and women weren’t sent away to give birth.

According to the Mayor, there’s a growing senior population on a fixed income, and with the closures of big companies, the council may be forced to raise taxes.

Longtime resident Rick Johnstone says Mackenzie gets the same tax break as other communities with vital services, and he would like residents to receive the full tax break.

Earlier this year, MP Bob Zimmer wrote a letter to the minister of finance, asking them to re-examine the amount of money people in Mackenzie can deduct through their taxes.
