PORTLAND — The Prince George Cougars lost their second game in the seven-game series against the Portland Winterhawks Saturday (April 23).

Falling 2-1, the Winterhawks outshot the Cougars 46-23 but the score may not reflect it.

The PG Cougars release reads that Portland’s Kurtis Smythe scored the only goal in the first period, as his point shot found the back of the net at 13:09.

Winterhawks’ Luca Cagnoni scored again a period off the rush from the left-wing.

Jonas Brøndberg was able to keep the game alive for the Cougars scoring his first career WHL playoff goal at 16:29 to make it 2-1. Brøndberg’s shot went off a Portland stick and bounced in.

As Portland’s offensive firepower was hard to match, Cougars goalie Tyler Brennan stopped 19 third-period shots, including a highlight-reel save on Portland’s odd-man rush.

Associate Coach Josh Dixon, says despite the loss, the Cougars fought hard.

“That’s two games in a row we had them on the ropes one way or another.”

“Absolutely impressed by our group in terms of their compete level, the number of guys stepping up, and the pace we’re playing at against a good, deep team. We could have easily come out of here with a split,” Dixon continued.

The Cougars come home for game three which is set for Tuesday, April 26th, in Prince George.
