Planting Season is here!

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s been some time since a large plant sale took place at UNBC. Every May, the David Douglas Botanical Society holds a massive plant sale.

“That’s how we do our fundraising to support the Society and also helps with the expansion of our new gardens,” explains BIrthe Miller with the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Society’s compound is starting to take shape for the big sale. But there is a trio of gardening-related events happening over the course of the month, beginning this coming weekend at the downtown Farmers’ Market.

“We are at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 7th from 8:30 to 2 p.m. We will have tomato plants for sale indoors and at the outdoor part of the market, we will have seeds.”

That event gets the ball rolling for another plant-sale-related event happening four days later, on May 21th.

“So you just choose the plants that you want, you put them in your cart, pay for them and, if it’s over $25 and you’re inside City limits, we will deliver them to your doorstep on the weekend. Or we can make arrangements to have you pick them up.”

There will be 120 varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, peppers, and strawberries.

And, for the first time since COVID, it will be back to normal, so to speak for the big sale.

“It will be, yes. We will have a giant sale right here on the 22nd from 10 to two p.m.”

Each year, the big sale has something for everyone, from exotic trees to garlic and onions to herbs and every vegetable that can grow in this part of the world. So, yes, contrary to what Mother Nature has up her sleeve these days, it IS gardening season.
