Wait times

Bond demands action on medical wait times

VICTORIA- The Opposition health care critic, Shirley Bond, spoke Wednesday morning about overwhelmed walk-in clinics and emergency rooms leading to a dramatic increase in wait times at medical care buildings across B.C.

“There are more than 900,00 people in our province who do not have a family doctor or primary care,” said Bond. “When people can’t find a family doctor, they are forced to rely on walk-in clinics, emergency rooms or urgent primary-care centres, which increases wait times.

The Prince George-Valemount Liberal MLA made it clear that these increased wait times are significant, rising nearly 50 per cent between 2019 and 2021, with the average wait time being 58 minutes, more than twice the national average.

“Increasing the number of doctors in B.C who choose the practice of family medicine” was a solution offered by Bond. “It is time to have conversations in this province about what we need to do in this situation. We need to have honest conversations with doctors, listen to their feedback, developing solutions that will lead to lasting change.”
