Colton Cameron says he needs to be more vocal next season as Spruce Kings’ newest captain

PRINCE GEORGE – Colton Cameron has often been the type of leader to lead by example, letting his effort and play do the talking rather than being a vocal guy on the team.

However, now that the Prince George Spruce Kings announced the 19-year-old as their captain for next season, he admits he will need to do more than just the attention to detail on the ice.

“I definitely need to be the main vocal guy or at least one of the main vocal guys,” he said. “In the past, I usually just lead by example. That was my main thing as a leader but now with the ‘C’ I have to be more vocal.”

When Cameron was first named as an assistant captain two seasons ago, he admits he found it difficult to be vocal just with how he was – a quiet leader. However, with each season in Prince George, he’s become more comfortable with speaking up and being a voice in the locker room or bench when needed.

Cameron, turning 20 in July, from Cloverdale BC, will be entering his 4th year as a Spruce King, along with his 4th year in the BCHL. The Spruce King captain has won a plethora of team awards which includes the 2021-22 defenseman of the year and was the recipient of the plus-minus award in back-to-back seasons (2019-20 and 2021 Pod Season). The Bentley University commit has and will continue to be a crucial part of the Spruce Kings defensive core. Cameron also has served as an alternate captain for the past two seasons.

Not only has Cameron won multiple team awards, but Cameron was also named a Provincial Premier Award winner in Indigenous Youth Sport back in October of 2021. Cameron was credited with $500, and his name was put in the British Columbia Sports Hall Of Fame.
