Deadfall Brewing opens up in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE- There’s a new craft brewery on the block in BC’s Northern Capital.

Erin Baerwald and her husband Brandon opened up Deadfall Brewing along with a couple of friends after a number of years of producing their own homebrew.

“We all met in university, lots of time studying for exams and commiserating over pints of homebrew and really it was the start of the pandemic that kicked it off,” said Erin.

Instead of one signature craft, there will be many from lighter beers to darker IPA’s and ales.

“I basically want to brew everything,” said Brandon. “There’s a lot of breweries out there that pigeonhole themselves doing certain styles really well, but I don’t know, I guess I just get bored brewing the same thing all the time.”

Over the years the homebrew produced by the Baerwald’s has won awards, which made it a no-brainer when the plan came together to open up their own commercial brewing operation in Prince George.

The first beer brewed at 1733 Nicholson Street was a Baerwald staple was Basil Brown, originally one of the beers the couple has won awards for.

The opening lineup for Deadfall Brewing includes four beers, a Brown Ale, a West Coast IPA, a Dry Kettle Sour, and a Kolsh similar in nature to a lager-type beer.

“We raised what money we could between the four of us, and here we are,” said Erin. “It’s been a bit of a crazy trip with lots of ups and downs, but yeah it’s a classic dream of four friends hanging around.”

The product speaks for itself according to Erin, although the plan is to make the environment somewhere everyone is welcome.

The Baerwald family is a new one to Prince George only arriving in January 2020, after living on the prairies for many years. The brewery is only part of their lives, the pair are UNBC employees and have their Ph.D.s in Biology.

They haven’t gotten to this point on their own, the help from other local breweries Crossroads and Trench made sure they got up and running.

Because of the paperwork backlog with governing bodies, the serving of alcohol on premises cannot take place although off-sales still can. You can find more information about their hours of operation on their social media.
