Ukrainian roadside support

PRINCE GEORGE – A few dozen people lined the edge of the highway at the intersection of 16 and 97 Sunday afternoon, reminding drivers about the war in Ukraine.

Holding signs were half a dozen Ukrainian refugees who feel the fight for democracy must continue.

Maria and Daria Ocheretnya are sisters who arrived from Ukraine a few weeks ago. They were part of a group of residents this past weekend wanting to highlight the injustices occurring in their homeland.

Prince George didn’t have a formalized Ukraine-Canadian association, so recently, some residents created the Helping Ukrainians Gathering Strength support group.

Sherry Theuerkaus, who helped organize the roadside event, says the newly formed group’s purpose is for those who want to connect with the local Ukrainian community.

Those looking to be part of the Helping Ukrainians Gathering Strength can find more information on Facebook.
