Prince George- Some call it the unofficial start of summer, others call it the May long weekend.

However you describe it, there is no doubt that everyone gets excited for the first long weekend of the year.

With over six thousand trails throughout British Columbia, there are many options for anyone eager to travel around the province. Being safe is just as crucial as having this fun this weekend.

“Being prepared is key. We were taught a long time ago to drive with proper seatbelts on, and know it is a habit. The idea of proper trip planning, having the right training and taking the essentials with you. When that becomes a habit, we have succeeded.” says Sandra Riches of BC AdventureSmart.

BC AdventureSmart recently released a series of educational videos on the eleven most called upon trails in British Columbia. The goal of the series is to provide hikers with an in-depth trip planning tool for any occasion.

Unfortunately, accidents do happen in the wilderness. That is why Prince George’s search and rescue asks you to be extra cautious this weekend and prepare for any conditions.

“This year seems to be a little bit later spring, So we do have a lot of snow in the mountains. We are getting people still snow showing in the mountains,” said Dave Merritt of Prince George’s search and rescue. ” Be cautious, be prepared. Just because it is nice and green in the in-town does not mean we won’t have winter in the mountains.”

In case of an emergency, dial 911. There are over 3000 search and rescue volunteers around the province that can come and help you make it home.
