PRINCE GEORGE – Prior to the pandemic, the sport of rugby was especially popular among girls in British Columbia. According to BC Rugby, nearly 40 per cent of all those registered in their youth programming were girls, but this dropped to 20 per cent during the pandemic.

In Prince George, the sport has struggled, resulting in girls’ programming folding completely. The high school teams have gone without for four years according to Adam Gordon, coach for the College Heights Secondary School team.

But now, the sport is gaining traction once again, and registration and teams are popping up at a rapid pace.

In Prince George, numbers reached a point where high schools could hold a high school girls rugby 7s tournament, with teams from College Heights and Nechako Valley (Vanderhoof) coming to the grass fields at Prince George Secondary School to join the Polars for a Friday of scrums.

“My seniors didn’t get to play through their earlier years of high school, and we’re just trying to bring it back,” explained Gordon. “We’ve been encouraging the other schools to start their programs. We started from nothing. We literally put up a sign-up sheet and just saw who came out.”

Many of the players coming out to high school programs have spent much of their youth playing sports like soccer, but as Gordon says, they’re drawn to the sport of rugby after just a few practices.

“It’s a sport a lot of us don’t grow up with. I, myself, didn’t get into it until I was in grade 10. They’re coming from everything: basketball, soccer, volleyball. They find it’s the sport that suits them. They love the team atmosphere and the culture that comes with rugby.”

Gordon says there’s a lot of potential for young female players in the sport, with a few local products committing to the U Sport, getting both an education and an opportunity to extend their playing careers.
