PRINCE GEORGE– June is ALS Awareness Month.

ALS is a disease that gradually paralyzes people because the brain is no longer able to communicate with the muscles. An estimated 3,000 Canadians are currently living with ALS. Darryl Borsato is one of them living with it.

Finding out you’re diagnosed with ALS is probably one of the worst things you could ever hear in your life. It’s a death sentence. – Darryl Borsato, Diagnosed with ALS

Borsato was diagnosed 4 and a half years ago. He currently lives in Kelowna dealing with the disease every day. However as bad as it is, Borsato says the worst part is watching his family see him struggle.

It’s the families, it’s the caregivers, and the people who care about someone with ALS who are impacted the hardest. As someone living with this disease, it’s a terrible thing, watching my wife go through my daily process of degenerating over time is a heartbreaking process.

However when the month of June starts it’s a chance to spread awareness about the disease and what people are going through. There are various things someone can do to help. One is donating toward research another is taking part in the walk to end ALS. The largest volunteer-led fundraiser for ALS Societies across Canada.

Currently, there are 430 patients registered in B.C., 17 are from Northern BC, and 7 are from Prince George. A walk will be held on June 26 at Lheidli T’enneh memorial park to help to support patient care and ALS research. To register you can head to the Move to Cure ALS Website or go to the ALS Society of BC‘s website for more information.
