UNBC surpasses sixteen thousand graduates

PRINCE GEORGEAfter nearly three decades of graduates, the University of Northern British Columbia saw its 16 thousandth student walk across the stage at Friday morning’s convocation. A special milestone for the school paying tribute to the 16 thousand people who signed a petition and donated $5 to get the school off the ground.

It was the first time since 2019 that UNBC hosted an in-person ceremony for their graduating class.

“It’s a milestone graduating class this year, sixteen thousand graduates to match the sixteen thousand that put five dollars to start the petition to get the school off the ground,” said the President of the University of Northern British Columbia, Geoff Payne. “The community came together almost three decades ago, and had hope, had a vision, had an expectation of a university in the north.”

While every Graduation is unique in its own right, the Class of 2022 has a little bit more to celebrate after all the events over the last two and a half years. During their time at UNBC, some students have been through the pandemic, strikes, and lockdowns while completing their education online.

There were hundreds of graduates on hand for the Friday morning convocation. A common theme when talking to former students was the sense of pride felt by all who graduate from UNBC.

“UNBC is really about the people in the community and just being here on campus.” Says graduate Isabella Wilson-Beaulieu. ” That sense of home and not having to worry about your thoughts being different than somebody else’s because you’re able to embrace those and really fight for what you believe in.”

Friday was just the first day of celebrations, with other convocations scheduled around the north next week.
