PRINCE GEORGE – The last time National Indigenous Day was celebrated in the City was June 21, 2019. But, as we see a return to pre-pandemic norms, the event is coming back.

“It’s building. And building and building,” says Chief Dolleen Logan. “We’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for the go-ahead. “COVID put a damper on everything.”

Back in 2019, when the event was last held in Lheili T’enneh Memorial Park, it was a coalescence of many different cultural elements and organizers this year want to build on that momentum. “The main stage, obviously, is the celebration of music, of dance, of drumming,” explains Jen Rubadeau, Event Manager for the National Indigenous Day.

“People get so into it. The musicians are going to be doing a lot of incorporative stuff. So a lot of audience participation.”

To be held on June 21st this year, which is a Tuesday, means there will be some extra special guests at this year’s event.

“This year, School District 57 will be bringing the kids,” explains Chief Logan. “We plan on having fun. what’s more fun than food and dancing and kids?”

With that, the Lheidli T’enneh is inviting all to come and celebrate in the park, the Lheidli T’enneh’s ancestral home, on National Indigenous Day.
