Heat dome preparedness can be your best defence

PRINCE GEORGE – An extreme heatwave affected much of BC from late June to July last year. The record-breaking heat led to the death of nearly 600 people in the province.

When people think of North Central BC, winter and cold weather likely jump to mind. However, as proven by last summer’s heat dome, summers can get very hot. Therefore the Canadian Red Cross suggests we need to be prepared should that heat return.

Canadian Red Cross says to find ways to keep cool before hot weather.

Arrange air conditioning and fans to help keep your home cool. Find out where you can go to get cool, such as public libraries, malls, and municipal cooling centers

Discuss heat safety with members of your household.

Scientists found last year’s heat dome event was a 1000-year weather event, made 150 times more likely by climate change. In BC, the largest number of deaths took place between June 25 and July 1st.
