Teaching PG, Indigenous culture through beading workshops

Jun 3, 2022 | 5:08 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – Crystal Behn is currently the Indigenous Programmer at Two Rivers Gallery and she also runs the beads and bannock workshop. In this workshop, people learn to create authentic indigenous crafts, using everything from Moose hide, fish scales, porcupine quills, and beadwork.

“It’s open to everyone, not just Indigenous people, I’ve had people message me and say, can I come even though I am not Indigenous? and yes. It’s important for everyone to learn” explains Crystal Behn, Indigenous Programmer at Two Rivers Gallery,

Behn, has been running the workshop since last September, she says it has become so popular that they have had to expand the class and time, and put people on a waiting list.

“If they pass on this knowledge to the next generation. That keeps it alive, there have been so many instances through history, this has been tried, people have tried to take this away from us.”

There are a couple more workshops coming up. There will be a workshop centered around Missing and Murdered Indigenous women on June 7th, and final Beads and Bannock workshop on the 9th. If you are interested in learning more contact Two Rivers Gallery.
