PRINCE GEORGE– Golf is a popular sport in Northern BC, especially with all the beautiful courses to play on. For Randy Mackus, it’s one of the many joys he gets to do despite only having one arm.

Back in 1995, Mackus lost his arm to a rare nerve tumor that they didn’t discover until it spread. When they found out the cancer was aggressive the best way to keep him alive was to amputate everything up to his shoulder.

For 26 years, he’s been embracing his life on and off the course, and in a week’s time, will be heading down to Washington for a special tournament put on by the North American One Arm Golfers Association. This will be the 21st annual meeting and championships the organization has put on.

Mackus will be joined by some of the best one-armed golfers from all around the world as well as a couple of first-timers like himself. However, he isn’t worried about his score. He is looking forward to the experience of meeting other golfers and seeing how they have lived their life with one arm, as well as studying their golf techniques.

The best part? He’s hoping to give back to the community of Northern BC and to teach all-inclusive golf to youth, all with the goal of growing the game in Prince George while also inspiring others with disabilities like himself to give it a shot and see what happens.

Mackus appreciates all of the courses and owners around town and says he couldn’t think of a better place to golf than in Prince George.
