Prince George Wrestling Club off to Nationals

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Wrestling Club sent a handful of their top wrestlers to Nationals this weekend in Calgary. After a multi-year hiatus, athletes finally got back on the mat in April and have been working on their craft in preparation for this event. The best of the best will be there and the athletes are excited to get out there and compete despite the stress levels that come with a national stage.

“Kind of a little bit overwhelming because it’s nationals, like who wouldn’t be overwhelmed about that. But I think I’m going to be okay. And if not, it’s just going to be fun for the experience,” said Amy Giesbrcht, a Prince George Wrestling Club member.

Although placing on the podium would be a great success for these Prince George wrestlers, it’s not necessarily their main priority.

“I come out there not looking for any competition, just for fun, and I just love wrestling,” said Hunter McCarthy, a Prince George Wrestling Club member.

Nationals give these young hopefuls the chance to see their hard work come to light.

“I’m hoping to get to the podium. I’d be happy with first, second, third, or fourth. Fourth is still fourth in the country. Still good with me. But for my first tournament, it’d be a good feeling knowing that I did all this work and it brought me somewhere,” said Caleb Low, a Prince George Wrestling Club member.

This event will run Friday and Saturday with a different style of wrestling taking place on Sunday.
