Thousands take in SD57 student led anti-racism presentation

PRINCE GEORGE – Two years ago the mission of a group of the School District 57 Student Advisory Council (DSAC) was to create better awareness, understanding, and find a way to address racism.

On Thursday, after hours of discussion, the plan became reality as a district-wide anti-racism discussion took place with thousands of students.

“Our goal was always to get into classrooms and this is our demographic that we are finally reaching,” said DSAC member and Grade 12 student Harsh Dhaliwal.

About 4,000 students tuned in to hear the messages from students and members of the SD57 community, previously released at a premiere event in February.

“The most important thing is in front of kids,” said Katie Marren, Vice-Principal of Indigenous Education for SD57.

This marked the first time the videos has been shown to a large group of students aside from a trial run in Valemount.

Administrators linked to the project agree this is what happens when adults step aside and let students create their own work, a true form of student agency.

Many of the students part of DSAC will be graduating from SD57 although the legacy left behind will be carried on by the remaining members of the group. New members will also be joining DSAC in the fall to decide on the next major project for the group of senior SD57 students.

Anyone who still wishes to view the webinar can do so, although the live interactive element is now closed. It can still be a conversation starter for your classroom, social group, family or self. Perhaps it might inspire your curiosity and confidence to stand up against racism when you see it happening in your own life.

The show is still available for viewing here.
