PRINCE GEORGE – 34 Western Hockey League players have been invited to participate at a pair of Hockey Canada National Summer Camps in July, and of those, three of them are members of the Prince George Cougars.

The Cougars’ leading scorer, Riley Heidt, has been selected to participate in the National Men’s Summer U18 Team Selection Camp.

In 65 games last season, the 16-year-old scored 21 goals and 37 assists as he went on the lead the team in points. Heidt finished three points shy of tying Brett Connolly’s 16-year-old Cougars’ rookie scoring record set in 2008-09. Heidt was 11th in WHL Rookie scoring.

Meanwhile, goaltender Tyler Brennan and defenceman Ethan Samson have been selected for the National Men’s Junior Team Summer Camp.

Goaltender Tyler Brennan is the top-ranked North American goalie heading into this summer’s NHL Draft. Brennan, from Winnipeg, Man., played in 39 games this season, and posted an 11-25-1-1 record, with a 3.58 goals-against average (GAA) and .899 save percentage (SV%). He also had four shutouts. Brennan was excellent in the WHL Playoffs, as he posted a 1.86 GAA and .954 SV% in four games against the Portland Winterhawks.

Samson, 18, posted career highs in goals (15), assists (28) and points (43). The 18-year-old finished fourth in team scoring and was the second-highest scoring defenceman on the Cougars’ roster. Samson led the Cougars with five game-winning goals and was tied for the team lead with eight power play goals. The Philadelphia Flyers prospect was second on the team in shots with 235. The Delta, BC product was just one of two players on the team to play all 68 regular season games. To date, Samson has played in 151 career regular season games and has posted 18 goals and 62 points.
