PRINCE GEORGE – It’s another sure sign of summer: mosquitos are back. For nearly 40 years, the City of Prince George has adapted by assembling a mosquito control program to bring the population down to a tolerable level.

Mosquitoes need standing water to develop. Without standing water, there are no mosquitoes, as mosquitoes cannot complete their life cycle without water. According to the City, high mosquito populations can limit outdoor activity for everyone.

Hudson Shelvey is a long-time tree planter and says this year’s mosquitos are the worst he has ever seen.

Prevention and reduction of mosquito larval development sites is the first objective of the City of Prince George program, as prevention is always key.

Residents can help further reduce the mosquito population during peak seasons in April, May, and June by removing all standing water from their properties.

Those who work outdoors and deal with mosquitos almost every day say there is not much one can do to keep the bug away.

If the river levels fall quickly within the city limits, treatment occurs before mosquito larvae have time to develop into adults.
