MCLEOD LAKE- The McLeod Lake Indian Band invited those from the Mackenzie and Prince George areas to join them in celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day on Tuesday.

“It’s just a celebration of beautiful culture, and that culture can be involved with anyone and everyone,” says Kyle Sam of Dudes Club Prince George. “It’s definitely just a beautiful way for people to come together.”

As people across Canada celebrate National Indigenous peoples day Tuesday, locals believe this is a step in the right direction for reconciliation.

“I view it as a form of reconciliation with our neighbours and business partners in our area,” said the Chief of the Mcleod Lake Indian Band, Harley Chingee.

Even with rain in the forecast, a crowd of hundreds was on hand in Mcleod Lake to honour Indigenous peoples.

“Even though the weather’s a little gray today, I think there’s still good participation here. I think that’s a sign of respect for us as indigenous people in MacLeod Lake,” added Chief Chingee. “My hat’s off to the people that came even when it was raining.”

Along with drumming and singing, the event had food, dream maker workshops and even a moose calling competition.
