Weekend weather will bring heat, high flows and risk of wildfires

PRINCE GEORGE – British Columbia is expecting its first hot stretch of summer starting this weekend and Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most regions around the province.

Scientists are watching river flows as temperatures are expected to warm up for the next few days. At the same time, BC Wildfires crews continue to be ready to respond to possible fires.

The Prince George Fire Centre has responded to 31 fires since April. Five fires are burning, but none are in the Prince George area.

Dr. Stephen Dery, UNBC Professor, Environmental Science, says “we have a bit of a loaded gun situation where we have a lot of snow still to melt, and hopefully, the temperatures not rise too quickly and melt the snow rapidly and hopefully, it’s going to be a gradual melt.”

The River Forecast Centre is issuing a High Streamflow Advisory for the Upper Fraser River, including areas from Prince George and upstream through the Robson Valley. The flows have remained elevated over the past week due to snowmelt and precipitation runoff.

No significant flooding is expected. There may be possible minor flooding in low-lying areas.
