Fortis BC says faulty appliance, not gas leak, prompted evacuation of Walmart

PRINCE GEORGE — Update: Walmart was evacuated this morning over fears of a gas leak.

The store was evacuated at around 10 a.m. CKPG arrived on scene to find multiple customers and employees milling about outside the store.

Fortis BC say they were called in to investigate following reports of an odour, which was not related to natural gas, but rather a faulty appliance in the building. The store reopened shortly after 11 and employees and customers were allowed back inside. No one was injured.

Fortis BC says it would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that if you smell rotten eggs or hear the sound of escaping gas, stop what you’re doing, go outside and dial 9-1-1 or call FortisBC’s 24-hour emergency line.

Earlier: A gas leak forced the evacuation of the Prince George Walmart this morning.

CKPG arrived on scene to find several employees and customers waiting outside the store.

There are no reported injuries. The store reopened just after 11 a.m. and customers and employees have been allowed back inside.
