Dance classes geared for the deaf and hard of hearing

PRINCE GEORGE – A local dance studio is taking new steps in creating a preschool ballet class for those who are deaf and hard of hearing. This dance class will be a first in the north and begin in the fall.

Local dance teacher Kate McGowan has taken on several lead roles in dance and musical stage productions.

She is hard of hearing and has learned unique techniques to stay in sync with the music and other dancers.

Starting this fall, she wants to share those strategies with others who are deaf or hard of hearing.

There are plans to alter the music to make it work for everyone.

Kate McGowan says that music is in your head. You don’t have to hear it to be able to dance. You don’t need to be able to hear the music in order to do it. Everybody is capable in their own way.
