Updated: Rapid snowmelt and rainfall have the River Forecast Centre upgrading to a

flood watch for the Upper Fraser and the Fraser River from Prince George to Quesnel .

The public is advised to stay clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks.

PRINCE GEORGE — High streamflow advisories are in effect for the Upper Fraser and the Fraser River from Prince George to Quesnel.

The BC River Forecast Centre attributes the advisories to the hottest weather of the year from 24.1 celsius on June 25, 26.7 celsius on June 26, and 28.6 celsius on June 27.

Additionally, snowmelt rates at the automated snow weather stations in the Upper Fraser are averaging 35 to 65 mm of melt per day this week. And in addition to that, rainfall ranging from 30 to 65 mm is forecasted in the Upper Fraser from June 28 to June 29.

“Moderate to heavy rain falling on a rapidly melting snowpack increases the possibility for sudden increases of flow for rivers and creeks,” says the BC River Forecast Centre.

In light of the advisories, the public is advised to stay clear of the fast flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high streamflow period.
