Grandstand evacuated following shooting at Williams Lake Stampede

WILLIAMS LAKE — Update: Williams Lake RCMP are confirming one person is in custody following today’s shooting at the Stampede Grounds.

Sgt. Kris Clark says the shooting occurred at 3:37 p.m. with two people suffering injuries.

“Preliminary information suggests that this incident was targeted and no further risk remains to the public. The investigation is in its infancy and no further information is available at this time,” he says. “If anyone has any information or any video of the incident and has yet to speak to the police, please contact the Williams Lake RCMP at 250-392-6211.”

Earlier: The grandstand was evacuated during the Williams Lake Stampede this afternoon due to an apparent shooting.

Williams Lake City Councillor Scott Nelson told CKPG News that two people were shot this afternoon at the back of the grandstands. He says they’re both in hospital and one person has been arrested. RCMP are also looking for another potential suspect. He’s anticipating that the shooting was gang related.

Organizers of the event posted the following message to Facebook at around 5 p.m.

“There was a very serious incident during our bull riding event this afternoon. We have evacuated the public from our grandstands. The Board of Directors will be releasing an official statement shortly. Anyone needing assistance please call the Interior Crisis Line Network 1-888-353-2273.”

The 94th annual Stampede kicked off Thursday and was due to wrap up today.
