More childcare spaces coming in BC schools

PRINCE GEORGE – As BC’s provincial government continues the push for childcare spaces, where many of those are going to continue to trend towards BC schools.

This comes after the province shifted the childcare portfolio into the Ministry of Education from the Ministry of Children and Family Development back in February 2022.

Recent proposals from the School District 57 Board of Education outline allocated childcare spaces with all new school expansions and renovations.

“We are seeing a move to more and more centres being located in schools,” said Tim Bennett, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern BC.

Bennett added the guidelines and restrictions for having childcare facilities within schools have also been adjusted to make it easier for non-profits and organizations.

Suzanne Hoffman, CEO of the BC School Trustees Association said the transition has been positive so far and there is a lot of potential for childcare within BC school facilities if the funds are provided by the province.
