Damage to Winnipeg street minimal following storm

PRINCE GEORGE – Roads across Prince George were swamped on Tuesday evening after a heavy thunderstorm soaked the city.

Among those underwater was Winnipeg Street, the same stretch where a costly sinkhole was found back in 2018.

When that sinkhole occurred it was a pothole that just kept on growing, unlike Tuesday’s event of heavy rainfall that washed away parts of the pavement. According to city officials, there is no reason for concern at this point.

“There are no indications of that for any section along Winnipeg Street,” said Wil Waddel, Manager of Utilities with the City of Prince George. “We did take a look at the location where the manhole popped off and there were no indications there were any issues.”

Other streets across the city were closed due to pooling water on Tuesday although none sustained significant damage.

Dr. Mauricio Dziedzic, Chair, of the UNBC School of Engineering said from what he saw the infrastructure held up well from what he saw, although he is frustrated there is no data to evaluate how much rain actually fell.

Dziedzic said there are only two weather stations providing data for Prince George, one at YXS and another at UNBC. He believes it’s time for the City of Prince George to invest in their own weather station in the downtown core.
