Petition to turn Ginter’s Meadows into an official green space

PRINCE GEORGE – Ginter’s Meadow is a beautiful lush green space in the middle of Prince George, and is used by hundreds of people each day. Members of a group called Ginter’s Green Forever, say there is a potential danger of losing it to development.

“The plan is to, it’s actually been on the books for a long time, is to run this Massey Boulevard here is to run [sic] behind me, through the Winter Green community park, up the hill and join it up with Tyner,” explains James Steidle, member of the Ginter’s Green Meadow community group. “Then there’s another road planned to extend Foothills behind us to join up with Ferry.”

According to the official community plan, Ginter’s has a proposed arterial roadway slated for the area in a 15-year plan. However, there are no rezoning petitions before the city and, according to council, there would have to be extensive public engagements before anything were to happen.

Right now, members are gathering as many signatures as possible, they have also reached out to the BC Parks to collaborate. Steidle says, if this infrastructure plan isn’t actually going to happen, then remove it completely from the OCP and change the status of the “field” to a park.

“When they develop that top of the hill, there is going to be huge traffic pressure on Tyner and University and that’s going to drive the argument to build this road through here.”

As mentioned, there is currently no rezoning placed before city council, nor are there plans to build a road through that area as of yet. The community members of Ginter’s Green Forever would like it to stay that way.
