PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George RCMP say there was a shooting incident today in one of the cells at their detachment on Victoria Street.

It all started when police responded to a report of a theft near 15th Avenue and Victoria Street this morning. Cpl. Jennifer Cooper says police located the suspect a short distance away and arrested the man, who was found to be in possession of a firearm and had an outstanding warrant. He was then taken to the RCMP detachment a short distance away.

“While being booked in, a physical altercation occurred during which bear spray was discharged and a police officer discharged their service pistol,” she says. “One police officer received minor injuries and the suspect was also injured in the altercation and received medical attention for those injuries.”

She says the Independent Investigations Office has been notified of the incident and RCMP won’t be providing any further updates.
