PRINCE GEORGE- Theatre NorthWest announced its new Theatre in the Pen Program Wednesday morning.

It’s a program that offers inmates activities and performances at the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre (PGRCC).

“This is a program I have been working on personally here at Theatre Northwest. We have always wanted to get this program off the ground,” said the Artistic Producer of Theatre NorthWest, Marnie Hamagami.

Inspired by other programs running in the Williams Head institution on Vancouver Island and the Prince George Orchestra’s old Pops in the Pen program, Theatre NorthWest hopes to bring a different perspective to the inmates of PGRCC.

“Jail theatre has been around for a long time. It’s an established way of reaching out to the community,” said Bradley Charles, an Artistic Associate at Theatre NorthWest. “It’s effective in reaching people who may have never had the opportunity to experience creating theatre or telling stories in a structured way.”

Theatre NorthWest also believes the program will bring many benefits to the community.

“I think we all recognize that Prince George’s going through a period of transition,” said Hamagami. “Theatre Northwest wants to do what it can to contribute to that. This is a small way we can be an asset in the community to help people transition through the legal system.”

The program will not only consist of small-scale performances but different games and activities working with the staff of the PGRCC to ensure the program’s success.
