Have a look inside the new Vanderhoof Cultural Centre

VANDERHOOF – A brand new space for travelling exhibits and a location for the community of Vanderhoof to gather was officially opened up at the end of June.

The exterior is a modern rendition of a pit house, a traditional home for Indigenous people in the plateau area of Canada located between the Coastal Mountains and the Rocky Mountains in BC.

The inside boasts space for artifacts from local First Nations including the Saik’uz First Nation, while also showing off a massive carving done by local carver Peter Rodseth.

The carving’s former home was in the Service BC building in Vanderhoof although local leaders thought the new cultural centre would be a more suitable location.

Many community members who attended the opening day ceremonies simply couldn’t take their eyes off of it.

Prior to this building being constructed in Vanderhoof’s Heritage Park there was no suitable space indoors in the community for artifacts, exhibits, or travelling art and history exhibits to be held.

The project was financed with help from all levels of government including the Federal Government, the BC Provincial Government, the local Municipal Government, and the Northern Development Initiative Trust.

The Cultural Centre is open for visitors on the west end of the District of Vanderhoof.
