Healthcare top of mind for Teegee following Council of Federation meetings

PRINCE GEORGE – After days of meetings between Premiers from across the country along with Indigenous leaders, the message from all corners of Canada is clear, more healthcare funding is needed.

Terry Teegee, Regional Chief with the BC Assembly of First Nations was part of that dialogue, advocating for the needs in Northern BC.

“The discussions are really important, First Nations and small communities can be better served,” said Teegee. “Doctors, nurses, and others are needed now more than ever.”

Teegee said the need is not only in Northern BC though, adding his counterparts across the province are seeing a healthcare system simply overwhelmed.

The Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS) one of the largest healthcare providers for Indigenous people across the country said they are feeling the pinch in many departments.

Rhoda Hallgren, Director of Community Health with CSFS said community members not having a family physician is having a trickle-down effect on the healthcare system, only increasing the burden for primary care centres and emergency departments.

Hallgren said it is only getting more difficult for rural communities where services are being stretched the thinnest given an ageing population.

It is unknown when any additional funds from the Federal Government may be provided, BC Premier John Horgan was frustrated by all of the unknowns in his media address following the Council of the Federation.
