PRINCE GEORGE – The burgers were flying off the griddle for anyone who wanted. By donation, of course.

The event was sponsored by the Northern Regional Construction Association and Brock White Constructions Materials and the latter played host.

“We just that the exposure for people in Ukraine was fading to black a little bit,” explains Kelvin Summerfeld, Branch Manager for Brock White. “I wanted to bring more attention to that through the Construction Association in Prince George. The Northern Regional Construction Association and Brock White. We felt it was a good venue to pull people together and raise a little money.”

Since the first few people began to arrive in Prince George back in May, there has been a steady flow from the war-torn country and registered through PG4Ukraine.

“In the last week, we’ve had three families come in,” says Dick Mynen with PG4Ukraine. “So we’re sitting right now at 48 people that have come to Prince George. We know of five that have come to Smithers, a couple have come to Quesnel.”

The money raised from the barbeque will help with those folks and those on the way.

“We’re going to give it to the PG4Ukraine Society and it will go towards helping local families who have been displaced from their homeland to Prince George.”

Mynen also heads up Share Hope, an organization that helps the displaced pay for things like rent. And he says this fall could be especially challenging.

“The challenge in September is going to be housing,” explains Mynen. “So the influx of students coming back to the community. We anticipate, in the next six weeks, we’ll have another 40 people and we see the numbers growing quickly.”

He says, while many of the folks are in Canada under emergency visas, they are now realizing as the war drags on, there is very well nothing to go home to.
