No suspense yet in NDP provincial leader race

PRINCE GEORGE – It was a couple of days ago when Attorney General David Eby announced he was running to become the next provincial leader of the NDP, and premier of the province. Since then he has run uncontested and the big question is will someone else put their name in?

Bobby Deepak a former NDP candidate who ran unsuccessfully for the NDP twice in the Prince George-Mackenzie riding – in 2013 and again in 2017, doesn’t seem to think any MLAs will challenge Eby.

There is always a possibility, I think that if there is a challenge it seems to be unlikely that it would be from the current NDP MLAs. Most of the MLAs are backing David Eby in the race. When you look at it in more of a broader perspective, it just shows the unity of the party. –, Bobby Deepak former NDP candidate.

But, is another candidate not running, good for the party? Dr. Douglas Jarvis a political science instructor at UNBC says it goes both ways, only having one person running in this race.

He says one candidate shows unity in a party, that they have the same goal. However, it can also potentially show a party is getting stagnant as well.

The deadline to take out membership is September 4 and candidates must submit their application, plus a 15,000 dollar entry fee, by October 4.
